The series “Between Lines” is a love letter to my partner, Pan. Best described by Hayao Miyazaki’s words, this collection celebrates the beauty of a love that motivates and sustains us. It highlights the challenges of life, the effort of putting one foot in front of the other each day, and the ease with which we can lose our passion. This series is a departure from my usual focus on uneven numbers, centering instead on the concept of a duo. The lines in these pieces represent two individuals, distinct yet supporting one another. Separate but together, they embody unity through individuality. The vessels in this series feature organic shapes and rough textures, emphasizing that imperfection can still be beautiful. I have deliberately highlighted these imperfections. The rope work signifies the bonds that hold and connect us. Yellow, the color of Pan, symbolizes sunshine and his radiant smile, adding warmth and brightness to the series.

In this series, I explore the dynamics of Perception versus Perspective ('the P word'). I find it fascinating how my outlook contrasts with the two individuals who raised me. My parents experienced a similar backdrop of knowledge and beliefs as each other. Considering that I was raised within their unique perception and perspective of their world, yet my own views are so different, I therefore question the depth of our conversations and understanding of each other. Does the disparity imply a deficiency in comprehending each other's worlds? Did we merely coexist, living past one another without truly hearing each other?

In the wake of numerous years of self-discovery, I have finally unearthed my true identity. The journey to inhabit this space has been a formidable one, marked by the trials of self-pity, self-harm, self-doubt, self-loathing, and a relentless cascade of heartbreaks, compounded by battles with depression and alcoholism. It was only through the tragic loss of my brother, who took his own life, that I found myself standing precisely where I am today – a testament to my resilience and transformation. This installation serves as a poignant declaration of my reclaiming the fragmented pieces of myself, reconstructing them into the cohesive entirety of my being. Additionally, it encapsulates my unspoken dread of forgetting who I am or losing parts of myself once more. This immersive creation embodies my self-indulgent act of crafting a time capsule, driven by the fear of relinquishing my identity again. Through this profound artistic expression, I confront the shadows of my past, ensuring that the essence of who I am remains eternally preserved.

In "Heaven or Hell," my art explores the complex interplay of my emerging gay identity within a religious context. It's a chalice, a sacred symbol, with a stem incorporating three penises, symbolizing the layers of my self-discovery. This juxtaposition represents my struggle between societal expectations, authenticity, and faith. Growing up in a Christian home, "Heaven or Hell" encapsulates my emotional journey, the dissonance between my true self and community expectations. It confronts the ultimatum I felt, choosing between authenticity and community acceptance. This piece shares the raw emotions of LGBTQ+ individuals reconciling identity with surroundings, aiming to foster understanding and challenge societal norms. "Embracing Authenticity: Breaking the Mold" In my artwork, "Don't Think Out of the Box, Boy," I challenge societal norms and explore the journey of self-discovery as a closeted gay individual in a traditional community. Using a serviette ring holder made from an assortment of penises, I symbolize the constraints of societal expectations. Each penis represents individuality within the LGBTQ+ community, united against conformity. The serviette is embroidered with slurs I've encountered, reclaiming them as symbols of strength. This piece asserts my right to exist authentically and encourages viewers to question self-imposed limits. It calls for empathy, understanding, and acceptance while celebrating the beauty of authenticity. "Nurtured by Paradox: White Gold" delves into the intricate relationship between personal identity, tradition, and societal expectations. It embodies a milk jug adorned with breasts, fusing the nurturing essence of the land with the labor it demands. Growing up on a dairy farm, I encountered a conflict between religious observance and physical labor, where milking cows took precedence over rest on Sundays. This piece also reflects my suppressed gay identity due to societal norms, contrasting with the privilege denied by the sewing machine. "White Gold" invites conversations on identity complexities, labor roles, and the struggle for self-expression in conformity-driven societies. "Oops I Did It, Adam" is a poignant exploration of biblical narrative intersecting with personal identity and self-acceptance. Shaped as a snake, it serves as an egg holder, provoking contemplation on temptation, choices, and outcomes. The artwork parallels Eve's defiance and curiosity in the Adam and Eve story with the journey of embracing one's identity as a gay man, challenging societal norms. The snake, symbolizing temptation, cradles a crocheted egg representing vulnerability and transformation. This piece invites discussions on authenticity, choices, and empowerment, urging empathy for those navigating complex identities.

Me creating the vessels out of clay and Evie glazing them in her signature style. Bringing together two different skills. The process was very organic. We had a coffee and discussed a few options. And the one that stood out was “Naughty & Nice”. We both immediately connected with this theme and concept. Being both busy 🐝 we worked separately in the first stages. Me making the pieces to bisques for Evie to join me and glaze.( she glazed all of them herself )This was her first time glazing and she was a natural. It was so cool to see another artist in this space. From there I went and made the embroidered napkins and added the “anal beads” to the spoons. We both separately designed out part of the project while texting back and forth. We are installing this pieces for show at The End Gallery this weekend for a show. This will be another opportunity to work alongside each other setting it up. I am excited to learn from Evie how she will be setting up this series.

The word “moffie” is a derogatory meaning for gay. In my native language Afrikaans from South Africa. As a young boy I was called this word more times as my nick name. But like most words the lgbtq+ community adopt with open arms, take ownership & celebrate it as our own. Call me gay, call me faggot, call me a pouf, call me homo, call me bicha, call me a moffie. I am all of those words and more. I am gay and that is okay.

forgotten & reborn

Mark & Textures

April 2022

Group Exhibition

Sitting Room Gallery, Nathan Homestead, Auckland, NZ

Like forgotten artifacts resting on the deep blue ocean seabed, my art emerges from the depths, reawakening through the passage of time, patience, and love. Just as treasures buried beneath layers of sand and silt, my creations undergo a metamorphosis, transformed by the currents of inspiration and artistic growth. With each stroke of the brush, each delicate stitch, or each sculpted piece of clay, I breathe new life into forgotten fragments. Through the act of creation, I become an archaeologist of emotions, unearthing hidden stories and memories, and giving them a voice. Just as the ocean has the power to erode and weather ancient relics, life's experiences shape and mold my artistic expression. The ebb and flow of joy and sorrow, love and loss, find their place within the layers of my work. They become imprints of the human condition, reflections of our shared journey. And as I dedicate myself to this creative process, I realize that love is the key that unlocks the true essence of my art. Love for the craft, love for the materials, and love for the stories waiting to be told. It is with love that the fragments are delicately pieced together, forming a mosaic of beauty, resilience, and vulnerability. Just as the ocean's tides carry ancient treasures to the shore, I offer my art to the world, sharing the depths of my soul with those willing to dive in. And in the embrace of time, patience, and love, my creations are reborn, resurfacing to inspire, provoke, and connect. For just as the ocean holds secrets waiting to be discovered, my art carries the whispers of the past, waiting to be heard and cherished. Like the artifacts of old, I too find new life and purpose through the transformative power of creativity, reminding us that even amidst the depths of oblivion, beauty can be unearthed and treasured once again.
